Finding a Dressmaker

Whilst Tylers fabrics do not offer a making service in store,
Tylers provide a directory of experienced designers and couturiers whose details are available upon request – free of obligation.

No fabric purchase or contract is required to have access to this information – it is available freely in store.  It is Tylers Fabrics’ belief that, where possible, a client should consult with the
dressmaker/designer before the fabric purchase is made.

Clients are encouraged to pick 2 or 3 different dressmakers/designers to interview based on geography, and leave it up to the maker to discuss the cost of making the garment(s).  By taking Tylers’ fabric swatches, photographs and pictures to the maker, there is no
element of doubt in the costing, or any “ballpark” guesswork that is associated with “in house” seamstresses.

Tips for your interview:

  1. When visiting with a potential maker, be clear about what you expect and, where possible, provide visual aids such as
    photographs, sketches and pictures.
  2. Communication is key – the more you can show/tell the maker about what you are after, the easier it will be for them to picture what you are trying to create.
  3. Take all relevant fabric swatches and photographs of laces/trims that you are considering.  Make sure that the fabric width and any other relevant details are provided (such as if the lace is single or galloon border, etc.).  This will assist the maker to give you
    accurate fabric quotes.
  4. Try to get a sense of the maker’s personality – it is very
important that you feel comfortable with the person creating your dream gown.
  5. Ask to see photographsand/or examples of their work, and
    testimonials if they are available.

Please note: no person listed in the Tylers’ dressmaker directory is personally affiliated with Tylers Fabrics.  Each has a strong
clientele based on word of mouth and direct referrals, and work
independantly of Tylers Fabrics; it is up to the client and at their discretion to choose carefully which maker will eventually make their dream gown.
